Religious Communities in the Diocese

The Diocese of Oakland is blessed with the presence of many Religious priests, monks, and professed brothers and sisters.  They minister in schools and universities, hospitals, parishes, and various charities.  The different orders are organized according to their own structures, and are under the authority of their own leaders.  However, they minister in the diocese under the oversight of Bishop Barber.  Rev. Robert Herbst, OFM Conv., himself an "order" priest (Conventual Franciscan), is the bishop's representative to the religious communities.

The contact information for many of the Religious communities in the Diocese can be found here for Religious communities of brothers, here for Religious communities of priests, and here for Religious communities of women.

A unique Order in our diocese is the Discalced Carmelite Nuns, located in Kensington.  The Sisters in this contemplative order live an exceedingly simple life that does not include use of the internet.  Learn about their mission, story and needs on our website by clicking here.
